Why Is the Hermosillo Exit on the 101 Closed?

I was surprised to see the Hermosillo Road exit on the northbound 101 closed, since I didn’t think work on that part of the freeway was starting yet. What’s going on? It’s not being removed permanently, is it? —A.

First, no need to worry—the Hermosillo exit will not be suffering the same fate as the Los Patos Way exit.

The reason it’s closed now has less to do with the 101 than with the Butterfly Lane pedestrian undercrossing that runs below the freeway. According to Caltrans, which is handling the undercrossing renovation, the Hermosillo exit will remain closed for 60 days (it started December 1), followed by intermittent closures as necessary, for “ramp light relocation and pile driving activity.” In the meantime, of course, you can use the Cabrillo Boulevard one (bearing in mind that it’s on the left, which will change as part of the widening).

And here’s what the SBRoads.com folks have to say about the timetable for the Montecito segment of the 101 widening:

Our project team is still working on the staging plans, so there isn’t a revised timetable yet for the Montecito segment. When we get closer to construction, we’ll send out a map showing the main improvements color-coded by year of construction like we have for the other segments on SBRoads.com. […] Additionally, while there is some advanced funding for a portion of the Montecito segment, the team is still working on funding the majority of the Montecito and Santa Barbara segments. Both segments are also starting the coastal permitting process, so there is a lot of work to do before construction.

The map below shows where the “advanced work” is happening, which is why you’re seeing signs there for a 55 mile-per-hour speed limit.
