My husband and I have been perplexed about this piece of art on Cabrillo Boulevard. Was it damaged? Why did someone cover up part of it with concrete? Was there a depiction of the Chumash and/or other Native Americans that was offensive? Are there any plans to repair it? —R.
That’s the Syuxtun Story Circle, located across from Ambassador Park and Burton Mound. From a 2009 Independent article at the time: “The new 20-foot-wide mosaic […] sits upon the very location of the village of the same name, which was once the largest settlement in all of Chumash country, from the shores of San Simeon to the mountains of Malibu [is] comprised of about 200,000 unglazed ceramic tiles and the product of more than 5,000 collective hours of intense work by more than 100 people from a variety of backgrounds.”
According to Public Works engineer Laura Yanez, the artwork was damaged in last winter’s storms, and the concrete is a patch to prevent further damage. “The City is collaborating with the designated Chumash representative and the mosaic artist of record to repair the Syuxtun Story Circle mosaic this spring.”
