Now This Is How You Decorate a Montecito Villa

From the outside, 854 Rockbridge Road in Riven Rock seems like a better-than-average version of the Mediterranean Revival style so popular in Montecito at one point. Look closely, however, and you’ll see that architect Marc Appleton and actress Joanna Kerns pulled off the neat trick of building a house (completed in 2006) that feels as if it has been around for much longer.

Villa Corbeau, as the property was christened, comprises “five separate but related structures.” Four of those are the main house, a garage with guest cottage, pool house, and offices/studio. I’m not sure whether the fifth is the potting shed, chicken coop, or gazebo.

Inside is a master class in how to decorate a house of this style (as long as you’re not a minimalist). Note the subtle, impeccable use of color.

The colors get bolder in the kitchen.

The bedrooms and baths….

The style continues in the outbuildings, although the colors are toned down a bit.

And the grounds are lushly landscaped. The listing quotes Appleton as saying that the gardens are supposed “to look like those of a Mediterranean country house gone to seed,” but they look well-tended to me.

The house joins several other Rockbridge Road properties for sale—vacant lots at 790 and 800 Rockbridge ($2.995 million and $1.995 million, respectively); the wan 1987 Tudor at 850 Rockbridge ($3.49 million); and the soon-to-market 848 Rockbridge, a sexy spec renovation by Xorin Balbes ($6.95 million). More on that last one when it officially comes online…. UPDATE: 777 Rockbridge just joined in at $3.25 million.
