••• Indoor cycling studio CycleBar Santa Barbara opens this Thursday in Noleta’s Magnolia Center.
••• “I thought you might be interested in the ‘new’ women’s clothing store TropiCali Beauty Boutique,” wrote K. (The “new” is because TropiCali was more of a salon when it was in the Funk Zone; now it’s on W. Calle Laureles, sort of across the street from Trader Joe’s.) “When I went in, I was pleasantly surprised. There used to be a small collection of clothes in there, but the owner recently went all in and really has turned it into a retail location. The clothes are nice and fun, and at a good price point. Seeing the clothes in person was a game changer.”
••• The French Wave Film Festival at the Riviera Theatre is July 12-18. Which reminds me: I’ll be spending some time in Paris and Corsica this spring, if you have any recommendations.
••• Daryl Hall (sans Oates) and Elvis Costello co-headline a show at the Santa Barbara Bowl on June 14. Here are two sublime songs, the latter featuring Chet Baker on trumpet….
••• Everything is 20%-50% off at The Well‘s “estate sale” from March 15 through 17 in Ojai. It’s at 11522 N. Ventura Avenue, the hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and all sales are final. I know the meaning of words and phrases can change over time, but an estate sale is when property gets liquidated, usually because someone has died and the estate needs to be disposed of. I’d wager that this is more of a yard sale.
••• Press release: “The County Board of Supervisors has scheduled a workshop on Potential Rezone Sites for the County’s Housing Element for Tuesday, March 19, at 2 p.m. Owners and agents for some of the potential rezone sites will present the Board with their visions for the development of housing and community amenities on their sites. The Board will not take any action on this date. The workshop will be held in the Planning Commission Hearing Room (entrance at 105 E. Anacapa) and will be streamed live. Watch the workshop and participate virtually here. Public comment is encouraged.” This would naturally be of more interest to people who live near the the potential rezone sites, so I asked if there’s a list of them, and this was the response: “We do not have a list of projects that will be presented. Over a dozen projects have expressed interest in making presentations. We have asked those who are presenting to submit presentations by Friday, March 15, but some who wish to address the Board may not use a presentation. We will have tables set up in the lobby for the project presenters to display plans.”
••• As I mentioned recently, my husband and I explored some of the public staircases of Silver Lake, and we loved it. I had bought him the Secret Stairs guidebook to L.A., which I recommend if you’re into the idea. The stairs themselves are cool, whether they’re painted or not, and you get to see a wide range of architecture, including some quirky houses.
