A Private “Beach Club” Is Setting Up on East Beach

••• “So the Postel House in Sharks Cove is now gone?” asked M. “Home at one time to a partner in SB’s oldest law firm and who once worked for Judge Fernald (Fernald Point). Cleese owned it, and 1813 next door at one time.” I don’t know anything about the house or its history, but I went to look. Sharks Cove is east of Fernald Point, and the house in question is 1815 Fernald Point Lane. As you can see from the above photo, it’s not gone, exactly, but it’s down to the studs. Here’s the description of the project from the county’s Planning & Development department.

The project is a request for a Coastal Development Permit, Case No. 22CDH-00000-00004, to allow for the remodel of the existing single family dwelling, including new doors and windows, replacement of an existing covered entry with a 107 (gross) square foot wood trellis, a new clerestory entry, new 193 (gross) square foot balcony, three retractable awnings, and the demolition of a 63 (gross) square foot chimney. An existing raised skylight that exceeds the 25 ft. height limit for the zone district will be removed. The project includes replacement of the existing outdoor deck and railings. With the proposed work, the size of the single family dwelling will be reduced to 5,997 (gross) square foot and the maximum height of the structure will be approximately 30 feet from existing grade. Foundation work is proposed to raise the lowest level finish floor to meet Substantial Improvement Flood Control requirements, but no change to the overall height of the residence will occur. No new habitable square footage is proposed. No grading or tree removal is proposed.

••• According to the most recent Highway 101 construction update, the northbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Road will open on November 15, which is a month ahead of schedule.

••• There’s an interesting new business called Riviera Beach Club on East Beach. “During our soft launch we are offering complementary beach set ups. Beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, and more! Once we fully launch in April we will be charging per person.”

••• The Hayes Commercial Group’s Q3 report says that Courtney Burke—”a Santa Barbara inspired lifestyle brand that embodies Southern California coastal living by combining luxury and comfort,” according to the apparel company’s website—has opened a shop at 931 State Street (Canon Perdido/Carrillo).

••• Santa Ynez General has a pop-up at The Well‘s Summerland shop through the end of December.

••• Another new tenant at The Post (f.k.a. Las Aves), besides the ones that were previously announced: a salon called Providence.

••• The former Rite Aid at 825 State Street (De La Guerra/Canon Perdido), currently Creations, is for lease. It’s one of the least attractive buildings on lower State. I had hoped it might get torn down to make room for residential development, since that size of retail space is hardly in high demand. Or at least the facade could be redone so it’s less banal.

Does the Riviera Beach Club have a permit to operate? It just seems that they have commandeered quite a large swath of prime beach space.

How can this “private” beach club charge on public land? (they can’t). Hopefully the city shuts this nonsense down.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for the city to shut down a business they issued the permits to.

It’s just a fancy-named equipment rental business. Think of it like the “Buoy Water Club” SUP Locker at Leadbetter or Cal Coast Adventures SUP/kayak rental at West Beach.
