••• The conversion of downtown Summerland into home-design central continues: Arrediamo, which had been in Santa Fe until a few months ago, is opening a 3,000-square-foot store in the Big Yellow House. The company “specializes in importing the world’s most beautiful hand-knotted, vegetable dyed, hand-spun wool fine carpets.”
••• Pura Luna Apothecary has decided to close its shop on Chapala Street; the last day is February 29, and there are sales in the store and online till then.
••• Musician Jacob Collier returns to Santa Barbara, this time to the Arlington Theatre, on May 19.
••• I was surprised to see that an ADU is in the permitting process for 800 Santa Barbara Street (at De La Guerra), because the apartment building takes up the whole lot. It turns out that the owner is hoping to convert the ground-floor commercial space into a 1,500-square-foot residence (with 500-square-foot terrace).
••• According to tomorrow’s city council agenda, “the City of Santa Barbara is proposing to enter into a three-year lease agreement for the property located at 621 Chapala Street for the purpose of a Daytime Navigation and Workforce Development Center for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity in the City of Santa Barbara.” That’s next to the Sherwin-William paint store, with frontage on Bradbury Avenue. “The Center will provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity to access support and services with the goal of assisting them to become document ready and secure housing. These services will include documentation readiness (e.g. acquiring birth certificate, driver’s license, Social Security card), case management, workforce development and life skills building, job search assistance, housing referrals, health care and mental health support.”
••• From the recent Highway 101 construction update: “As early as February 11, the southbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Road will close for construction until this summer.”
••• The agenda for the February 9 Central Board of Architectural Review meeting includes a new hotel at 1060 Faraday Street in Santa Ynez. More specifically, it’s “a new two-story, six-room hotel building with lobby of approximately 6010 sq. ft, and the conversion of an existing vacant two-story commercial structure into a four-room hotel building that will contain a management office and a housekeeping room.”
••• The Starr King Rummage Sale is February 10 at Earl Warren Showgrounds; donations are being accepted in the days beforehand.
••• After parking in the spaces at the south end of Santa Barbara Street in the Funk Zone, I watched a woman pass through a gate in the fence by the railroad tracks. Having never noticed the gate before, I followed her, and so I learned that it’s an easy way to get over to Anacapa Street (and the southwestern part of the Funk Zone). Back home, I excitedly told my husband, who replied, “Everyone knows about that gate.” But I’m throwing it out there in case I was not alone.
