A New Fitness Studio for Mothers and Mothers-to-Be

••• Natasha Caleel of Fit Mama SB has opened Sage Society, a fitness studio for “women during all seasons of motherhood,” at 360 S. Hope Avenue (behind the Hitchcock Cinema). “This 2,400 square-foot space offers daily childcare, strength-focused fitness classes for all levels, HIIT bootcamp, prenatal and postpartum workouts, mom-and-baby workouts, and one-on-one personal training. It will also serve as a collaborative space for events and workshops from other local wellness professionals.” The website has a link for a free class.

••• We’ve known for quite a while that the Brown Design Group had bought the former Church of Skatan building on E. Haley Street; turns out the company is opening a shop called Ministry of the Interior in at least part of it.

••• On January 27, Ensemble Theatre Company will present a benefit performance of A.R. Gurney’s two-hander Love Letters starring Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross, who famously worked together on the “Family Ties” TV show.

••• The Indian Pink shop at 1370B State Street, a few doors down from the Arlington Theatre, has closed. You can still buy stuff online.

••• Studio, the music-focused bar in the Funk Zone, is offering various wellness classes during January. There’s yoga, manifestation, and most intriguing, Studio x Synergy, “something between a workout, meditation, and a dance party.” And “all classes come with a complimentary drink after class.”

••• According to the January 12 Central Board of Architectural Review agenda, the John Sebastiano Vineyard would like to build “a Winery of approximately 22,935 square feet with approximately 344,476 square feet of new landscaping” on the 1,002-acre parcel at 7631 E. Highway 246 between Buellton and Lompoc.

••• From the Los Padres Forest Association: “After being closed for over 11 months, CalTrans has reopened Hwy. 33 in Ventura County.” It’s on the far side of Ojai, on the way to Cuyama. “This is great news for sure. Note that there are five locations with single lane traffic control lights that will tack on some additional travel time and that while Hwy. 33 has reopened, Pine Mountain Road, Matilija Road and all forest campgrounds up Hwy. 33 will remain closed for a while longer.”

••• Comedian Kevin Hart plays the Arlington Theatre on January 27.

••• The Totally Tubular Festival comes to the Santa Barbara Bowl on June 28, with Thomas Dolby, Tom Bailey (of the Thompson Twins), Modern English, Men Without Hats, The Romantics, Bow Wow Wow, Tommy Tutone, and the Plimsouls. I adore Dolby’s “She Blinded Me With Science,” but I’m going to have to go with “Hyperactive!” here, or I’ll end up randomly yelling “Science!” all day. P.S. If you were raised on KROQ, as I was, you might enjoy the recent-ish documentaries about Wham! and the Go-Go’s. I wish someone—Richard Blade?—would write an oral history of that era. Or maybe Ken Burns can make a 10-part documentary for PBS…. UPDATE 1/14: C. points out that Blade published a series of interviews done during the pandemic called The Lockdown Interviews.
