A Long Stretch of Route 192 Will Be Closed for Five Weeks

••• There’s a big road closure coming up: “a full closure of State Route 192 will begin on Monday, September 16, between Alamar Avenue and Highway 144″—basically from San Roque to Montecito—”to continue storm damage repair. [See update below.] This full closure is expected to be in effect for approximately five weeks. Access will be maintained for local residents during this period. Heavy spring rains caused a slipout resulting in the need to construct a retaining wall in this location.  Due to the narrow roadway and steep terrain, the equipment required for this construction will require the full use of the roadway.” The suggested detour involves taking the 101, via Las Positas and Hot Springs. UPDATE 9/11: Monte says that Caltrans came to its senses and will only close the road from Orizaba Road to Parma Park, as reported by the Independent, and Caltrans confirmed it.

••• Tamsen Gallery, devoted to the work of Robert Firestone, is taking over the Maune Contemporary space at 1309 State Street (Victoria/Sola), with an opening date of October 3.

••• Midcentury dealer The Salmon Trader confirmed that he is opening a shop at Victoria Court, hopefully by the end of the month, and it sounds fun: “I’m calling it Warlock, and I’ll have a wide array of objects on offer, but each thing will have provenance, a story, or at times both. The focus is art, antiques, and design—much of it from California—with some rare jazz, Zamrock, and psychedelic records and art books thrown in for good measure.” (If the word Zamrock is new to you, as it was to me, this is from Wikipedia: “a musical genre that emerged and gained popularity in Zambia during the early 1970s. It has been described as a fusion of traditional African music and psychedelic rock, garage rock, hard rock, blues and funk.”)

••• Jeff Shelton shared some materials for his project at 225 Equestrian Avenue. Of note: “The entry lamp will be held in the mouth of an Australian Dingo, since the clients have Australian roots,” which also explains the custom kangaroo tile pattern…. Moreover, he’s working on a new illustrated book, “Pub Theory, which is a playful look at how a Pub, or public gathering place, located within walking distance of homes in every neighborhood would create a domino effect of good things.”
