Faherty Is Opening a Big Store on Coast Village Road

••• A couple of choice nuggets from Hayes Commercial Group’s Q2 report: “Momentum Dance Company signed 5,900 square feet at 12 E. Figueroa St, presumably changing the use from office to studio/fitness.” And 1155 Coast Village Road (formerly Marcus, below) was leased by Faherty clothing, which has more than 60 stores across the country.

••• I love seeing a terrific independent business grow: Domecíl, the chic home-design-and-more shop at 1223 State Street, has taken over a large space on the parking lot side of Victoria Court. Directly under the Soho club, Domecíl’s “Studio” is less of a shop and more of a warehouse that owner Stephanie Payne-Campbell is using for—well, whatever she wants: furniture (for sale), wholesaling, photography, storage, events, you name it. Feel free to ask for a peek next time you’re there.

••• And a clarification about The Salmon Trader coming to Victoria Court: if it happens (no lease yet), it will be in what is current a Mi Salon storage room, not taking the place of Mi Salon itself.

••• I hear that Clare V. is expanding its current location in the Montecito Country Mart by taking Mate Gallery’s former shop (across from Bettina).

••• Ready for Shakespeare in the park… in Santa Barbara? Theatricum Botanicum’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be at Elings Park on the afternoon of August 17, followed by UCSB student company Naked Shakes performing Much Ado About Nothing on September 6 and 8. (Ticket info TBA.)

••• Now that the renovation of the Plaza del Mar Park bandshell is finished, “the Parks and Recreation Department aims to revive the venue’s long-standing tradition of hosting concerts, performances, and cultural gatherings in one of Santa Barbara’s oldest parks. Local artists, community groups, and organizations interested in hosting free community performances at the Plaza del Mar Band Shell are encouraged to contact the Parks and Recreation Department to coordinate.”

Great that the bandshell has gotten a chance for a second life! I doubt that many know of the late 1890’s Fred Forbush bath house with a band shell that was built facing the ocean, and amplifying ocean sounds along with the music! Would be fun if somebody played the music that was typically played at the 1901-1913 bathhouse with orchestra balcony for a special event! I would imagine the programs of the time were in the newspaper. Cheers!
