••• I have it on good authority that the former Hidden Oaks Golf Course, above More Mesa, is quietly on the market for $15.7 million. In May 2022, Kingdom Hospitality Group paid $7 million for the 12-acre property, publicly avowing that it would remain a golf course while—according to my source—privately pursuing the idea of developing it as a glamping resort, and even going so far as to secure a $12 million loan against the property. Now the firm behind the loan is said to have reclaimed the property and begun cleaning up some of the deferred maintenance in preparation for a sale. A mortuary was apparently interested in purchasing the property, but the seller was wary of a) a long process to secure a conditional use permit and b) the possible opposition of neighbors. ••• One step forward for State Street: Alo Yoga is opening at 821 State Street (De La Guerra/Canon Perdido).
••• And two steps back: discount chain Dollar Tree has leased the former 99 Cents Only store (Gutierrez/Haley).
••• From Caltrans: “Caltrans has implemented a full closure of Highway 154 in both directions from State Route 192 in Santa Barbara to the Hwy. 154/246 Roundabout in Santa Ynez due to pavement cracking extending across all traffic lanes. These cracks are more than one foot deep with several inches of differential observed at the surface. Residents will be able to access the closed section of Hwy. 154, but will not be able to travel through the damaged section of roadway. The primary detour during this closure is US 101 and State Route 246. […] It is not known how long this section of highway will remain closed.” Following Caltrans on X is the easiest way to keep up with its announcements.
••• An 867-square-foot addition to the San Ysidro Ranch’s pool house is on the June 27 agenda of the Montecito Board of Architectural Review. No word yet on what Ty Warner has planned for the space. Perhaps a kids’ club?
••• And the “new one-, three- and four-story mixed-use development with 39 residential units, a remodel/reconfiguration of the existing commercial buildings, a 1,300-square-foot storage room, and thirty-two vehicle parking spaces and forty-three bicycle parking spaces” at 1922 De La Vina Street (Pedregosa/Mission) is on the Architectural Board of Review’s June 24 agenda. We’ve known about this for a while—the plan is to put apartments behind the commercial buildings—but now we have much better renderings.
••• According to the most recent Highway 101 construction update, the southbound off-ramp at San Ysidro Road will reopen on July 2. But the southbound onramp will close July 1 and not reopen till spring 2026.
••• The James Perse store at the former Angel space (1221 Coast Village Road) apparently opened around a month ago.
••• Opening July 1 at Gallery Los Olivos: “Pillars 2024 is the culmination of a working series that local oil painter Bobby Williams has been exploring for five years. […] Williams invites you to reflect upon the rich and complicated history of migrant agricultural workers on the central coast: ‘It is a tale of both repression and progress… of dreams, and of the dignity in hard work and human resilience.’” Below: the very lovely “High Noon.”
••• “The City of Santa Barbara is pleased to announce the upcoming construction of the Santa Barbara Junior High School Multiuse Path Project. Construction will begin in late June 2024, with expected completion by the end of July 2024. The Project will widen the existing sidewalk at the school’s main entrance and create a twelve-foot-wide multiuse path for cyclists and pedestrians. The parkway, with its mature street trees, will be preserved. The new path will create a bypass for cyclists to avoid school drop-off and pick-up activity, thereby completing the 450-foot bike infrastructure gap along Cota Street between Alisos and Chapala Streets.”
••• Best to give this driver some space….
