MarBorg Industries Wants to Build an 18,774-Square-Foot Headquarters

••• Tomorrow’s Architectural Board of Review agenda includes the largest new building we’ve seen in these parts in a long time: a two-story, 18,774-square-foot office building for Marborg Industries, with 104 parking spaces. (Now we know what the company is doing with that price increase!) It’s at 2 S. Quarantina Street (at Quinientos). While the design by Cearnal Collective is handsome, I wish there was a way to shrink the ocean of parking—a two-story garage with an adjacent park, perhaps.

••• Also on the ABR’s agenda: “a 233-square-foot addition to the 941-square-foot Santa Barbara Landing Building and a new outdoor seating area” at 301 W. Cabrillo Boulevard. Of special note: “The existing interior office spaces will be removed creating more retail space. On the east side of the building a new walk-up concession window will be added to allow for pedestrian beverage and food sales along the adjacent boardwalk. On the north side a new food service counter window will be added. This will serve the coffee bar and new food service area.”

••• Also on the ABR agenda: 428 Anacapa Street (Gutierrez/Haley), where “the proposed project involves demolition of two single family residences and a detached garage, and construction of a new mixed-use structure comprising six short-term rental units on the ground floor and nine long-term rental apartments on the second through fourth floors.” I wonder what the thinking is behind the red canopy. UPDATE 8/7: From the developer: “Just wanted to shed some light on the red canopy which is actually going to be an artistic design that will be glass and backlit. It also will match a similar mural at the entry to the parking garage.”

••• Valerie June plays the Lobero Theatre on October 6.

••• According to Radius Commercial Real Estate‘s second-quarter report: 1) “Prevail Conditioning [has moved] from their long-term industrial space at 126 E. Haley St. into an upper State Street retail building at 3445 State St.”And 2) The new owner of 117 and 133/135 E. Ortega Street—currently a house and two office buildings—intends to build a multi-family development there. The property sold for $8,550,000.

••• Hayes Commercial Group’s second-quarter report, meanwhile, says that: 1) the City of Santa Barbara bought 222 E. Anapamu (Santa Barbara/Garden) for unknown reasons. UPDATE 8/7: “Half of the police department works out of that space,” commented Liz. “This should allow better interaction/integration with the police building at 215 E. Figueroa, at least until the new station is built.”

2) Umbra Space subleased the former Invoca offices on State (Haley/Gutierrez)—great news for restaurants in that area.

3) “The Post [a.k.a. Las Aves] at the corner of E. Cabrillo and Lost Patos Way has signed tenants for all but a few spaces in the center, according to the developers, and plans to launch next year.” And 4) Domecíl is moving to the [soon-to-be] former Punch space on State Street, next to the Daisy. Owner Stephanie Payne-Campbell says she’s hoping to open in early December. UPDATE: I should’ve pointed out that Punch is still open through October, with a sale until then.

The city’s purchase of 222 E Anapamu makes a lot of sense, really. Half of the police department works out of that space. This should allow better interaction/integration with the police building at 215 E Figueroa, at least until the new station is built.

Does anyone know what the purchase price was for the 222 E. Anapamu building?

Hi! I’m the developer of Anacapa. Just wanted to shed some light on the red canopy which is actually going to be an artistic design that will be glass and backlit. It also will match a similar mural at the entry to the parking garage. Thanks for the write up and I really enjoy your site!

Best,

Kyle

This is a disaster! Horrible facade and architectural design elements. The scale size and proportions of this rendering doesn’t fit in the area or anywhere in downtown Santa Barbara for that matter what a shame to build such a huge monstrous structure on such a little lot. I hope the city denies this disaster before Santa Barbara becomes another Santa Monica from out of state and city developers looking to just profit and run

Domecil will be SUCH a fantastic addition to State Street. Stephanie’s shop is SO beautiful! She has a great eye. I cannot WAIT to see what she does with this bigger space. Her pottery, textiles, baskets, clothing, books and tabletop offerings are all so meticulously curated. She is very thoughtful about what she sells in her shop…always mindful of the environment and sustainability. I especially love that she carries Mt. Washington pottery and tabletop pieces from LAClay. Also, such a TREAT that she is now nextdoor to The Daisy. My go-to spot for their super healthy Grain Bowl!
