The Proposed Expansion of Santa Barbara Airport

••• On the agenda for last Tuesday’s meeting of the city’s Architectural Board of Review: “Santa Barbara Airport Terminal Improvement Project Presentation on Preferred Conceptual Design.” Is the expansion warranted, given that SBA seems to be losing flights faster than it’s adding them? Anyway, the first image below is of the overall site plan, and the next two are of the ground floor and second floor, respectively.

••• “We are working to breathe new life into the studio,” emailed the folks at Montecito Meditation. “Beginning in June, we will also be offering yoga classes and bodyworks/massage and will be bringing fun workshops and sound baths into the space as the summer months go on. Our studio will be hosting a welcoming party this Friday from 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. followed by a complimentary mini sound bath from 6:10 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Our sound bath will be conducted by a new healer named Energy of Jade, a wonderful woman who just opened up a space in Victoria Court.”

••• S. noticed that the parking lot at the former Santa Barbara News-Press building is now a pay lot.

••• From Channel Islands National Park: “Channel Islands National Park is pleased to announce the reopening of Santa Barbara Island to public visitation. […] Winter storms caused substantial damage to the Santa Barbara Island dock wharf and adjacent building. During favorable weather conditions, crews worked diligently and safely to make repairs to the damaged infrastructure. While the lower landing is still undergoing repairs, access to Santa Barbara Island is available to boaters via skiff to rocks near the lower landing. Campers and day visitors can once again enjoy the smallest of the Channel Islands.”

••• Cute idea at the Global Eye shop in Los Olivos: a hat bar with “bling” to customize your hat.

••• My husband and I have signed on to be compeers for this year’s Music Academy season, which means we offer social support to one of the musicians—attend his performances, take him out to dinner now and then, etc. (The musicians all stay at Westmont College.) The organization could use a few more compeers, particularly for violinists, though no musical knowledge is required.

••• Opening June 2 at the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara: A Natural Curiosity, oil paintings by Nadya Brown: “In this series of lush paintings, Nadya Brown creates illusory, imaginary three-dimensional spaces that entice viewers to enter, explore, and examine closely. Through realistic drawing and highly saturated colors, these highly original depictions of decorative objects, flowers, birds, domestic spaces, and landscapes (often combined in a single painting) evoke time, light, and memory in a slightly surreal manner. Brown’s travels in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Mexico, plus living and working in different cultures provided much of the inspiration.”

I have long been a fan of the Global Eye shop – it was in Santa Ynez before moving to Los Olivos – always fun to pop in there…

And don’t get me started on the architectural disaster that is now Santa Barbara’s airport…

Given that most airports I’ve travelled through are soul-crushing industrial boxes, how is SBA a “disaster”?

As an architect, I disagree. Santa Barbara Airport is unique and sports decorative details befitting the quirky, charming Spanish Colonial style it was designed to be. Two thumbs up for that.

Can you format your page for phones so your photos can be enlarged? The menus you post are impossible to read.
