A New Chapter for the Sacred Space in Summerland

••• After 18 years, Jack and Rose Herschorn have sold The Sacred Space in Summerland to Amy Cooper (of the former Plum Goods store in Santa Barbara) and hedge fund manager/musician Pete Muller. When the store reopens this Saturday, April 8, Cooper says that can expect a similar experience with some changes:

We will still offer crystals, statues, garden decor and books, but I’ll be bringing in new merchandise to diversify the offerings—beeswax candles, ceramics, glassware, home goods, Lily Lambert jewelry, et al. My goal is that everything there offers a way to elevate your daily experience in some way. There’s a great quote from Rick Rubin—“Awareness is a practice maintained by rituals.” So whether that’s a candle, a great cup of tea, what you surround yourself in your home, the gifts you give, that is my inspiration. In a couple of months I’ll be adding in additional lighting and furniture, which adds to Summerland’s vibe as a design district. And I’m bringing back workshops and events, such a sound bath we held with Brandon Kaysen [above] who will be on the regular schedule. ••• G. asked whether United Airlines and/or American Airlines will be bringing back direct service between Santa Barbara and Chicago for the summer season. American said no (but you can still get there via Phoenix or Dallas–Fort Worth), and United didn’t respond, but the word from Santa Barbara Airport is that the airline is not planning on it at this time.

••• I was already pretty excited about the Highline Adventures zipline in the Santa Ynez Valley set to debut this summer, but after seeing the photo* below, I’m really excited. The company is hiring (18 and over) guides for the season; no experience necessary. (*Assuming it’s not faked.) UPDATE: The photo is real and the company is shooting to soft-open at the end of May.

••• A reader says that she has it on good authority that Goop is taking over the Montecito Mercantile space in the Montecito Country Mart, which sounds almost too plausible to be true. And I have not been able to verify it. For what it’s worth, a staffer at the Goop store at the Miramar resort told me that the company just renewed that lease for three years. Any further intel on rumors like this—or anything in general—is always welcome, and anonymity is guaranteed.

••• 2020 Chapala (Padre/Mission), which comprises an office building and chapel, sold for $2.4 million.

••• K. reports that story poles are up for the 250-room hotel at 101 Garden Street (on the west side of Garden, between E. Yanonali Street and the railroad tracks). It’s on the city Planing Commission’s April 6 agenda: “The project consists of the merger of six lots, removal of all existing structures, and construction of a new 174,812-square-foot (net) hotel containing 250 rooms (130 extended stay rooms; 120 lifestyle rooms) and an 85,298-square-foot subterranean parking garage located on a 4.53-acre site at the southwest corner of Garden and E. Yanonali Streets. Guest amenities include library, bar, lounge, 208-square-foot market, media salon, meeting rooms, living room, breakfast area, outdoor seating areas with spa, courtyard with pool and spa, fitness room, and a 7,500-square-foot roof deck. The project includes 267 vehicle parking spaces (234 subterranean and 33 at-grade), 46 bicycle parking spaces (26 subterranean and 20 at-grade), and 8 bicycle rental parking spaces for guests.”

••• The Robert Cray Band plays the Lobero Theatre on July 29.

••• There were lots of guesses for the recent Where in Santa Barbara…?, but no one got it. The obelisk is to the west of the Alano Club on E. Cota Street.

TRACY

I’m so excited to hear that Amy is taking over Sacred Space. Plum Good was one of my favorite shops on State and I’ve missed it so much!
