••• A while back, Suzanne asked about the provenance of the two blue vases atop the Presidio Plaza Building next to the post office. I tried asking various folks, but I was unable to get an answer. If anyone has an idea, please let me know. Also, I was surprised to see in a listing online that the building dates from 1985. Can that be accurate? UPDATE: “The monumental vases you see at Presidio Plaza were made by Fulper pottery, probably back in the 1920s,” says Mike. From the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s website: “The Fulper Pottery was one of the most prolific, successful, and long-lasting art potteries in America. Fulper had operated in Flemington, New Jersey, producing utilitarian stoneware since the early nineteenth century.”
••• The Black Keys play the Santa Barbara Bowl on May 4.
••• From Alaska Airlines about whether it has plans to reinstate service between here and San Diego: “We never say never but don’t currently have any plans to restart service on that route.”
••• Why do so many people around here avoid the outer lane in a double left-turn lane? The best example is on Garden Street, to get onto the southbound Highway 101 on-ramp. The other day, I passed seven cars in the inner lane—including some blocking the box—to make my way to the front of the outer lane. Are they afraid of having to merge after the turn? You have to merge to get on the freeway! What’s the big deal about merging twice?
••• Up now at Sullivan Goss: a group show called The Search for the American West. Below: “Storm Clouds (a.k.a. White Storm Cloud)”, a marvelous woodblock print by Werner Drewes.
••• Warning: strong language ahead, so skip to the next item if it bothers you. (Actually, that one might bother you, too.) Someone recently told me there’s an Overheard in Santa Barbara page on Facebook, which I promptly forgot about until I was walking on State Street and a homeless guy yelled, “I miss my Macy’s! I miss my Nordstrom, motherfucker!”
••• Since we’re already in the gutter: I found this amusing….

Agreed about the left turn thing! I’ve noticed that so many times. Especially when getting off 101 at Storke. There are sometimes 10-15 cars in the right lane and one or two in the left. I always assumed that it was because people just get into the turn lane that they need to be in after the turn so they don’t have to switch lanes? But, that can’t explain all of it.
Omg, that Facebook page (Overheard in SB) is almost tempting enough to make me want to re-open my Facebook account.

creatures of habit probably take the left side left turn lane on the Garden St. 101 entrance more often to avoid having to merge left as you do when entering the on-ramp in the right lane. the two lanes converge before transitioning to the freeway.
Watch your neighbor when turning on to Haley from Anacapa using the outside lane. Quite often the driver using the inside lane drifts over to the outside lane…mid turn!
Shhhh, don’t tell people about the Garden Street/101 deal. I have saved a lifetime in minutes using the outer lane to get around slow pokes.
