The style is classic Montecito Mediterranean mansion, not unlike 900 Hot Springs, which recently sold for $14 million (having been listed for as much as $23.5 million). That’s presumably the comp used for this property, although a less enticing one would be 818 Hot Springs, which is headed for auction after not selling at $12.5 million.
The owners of 743 San Ysidro Lane leaned on the color that Crayola used to call “flesh,” before common sense kicked in. The next owner might want to consider striped awnings for a bit of contrast.
The rococo inside, meanwhile, could be toned down. The dining room, in particular, makes me wonder again whether Generation Goop wants wants this level of formality.
If the exterior can pass as the French Riviera, the kitchen calls to mind somewhere in the Central Time Zone. That’s the conundrum with these kinds of grand houses: Back in the day, you weren’t meant to see the kitchen, let alone hang out in the adjacent seating area.
Anybody who builds a pool in a quirky shape gets extra points. And the tennis court is among the prettiest I’ve seen. I wonder which gets played more (or less) in Montecito: tennis or bocce?
