••• Groundbreaking is this week for Vera Cruz Village at 116 E. Cota, next door to F45 and Dune Coffee Roasters. Th project, from the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara, “will serve the special needs population in the Santa Barbara Community by providing 28 new affordable rental studio units, a one-bedroom manager’s unit, and free supportive services. […] Construction is anticipated to […] be completed within 12 to 14 months. All studio units will be subsidized with Project-Based Vouchers, making rent affordable at 30% of a resident’s income.”
••• I’m six months late to this, but Pilates & Or has opened on Garden Street between Cota and Haley. The website describes it as “Pilates meets high-intensity training. An athletic reformer class that strengthens and tones the entire body.” The name refers to instructor Or Kahlon, “a world-renowned ballet dancer. He was the former soloist of the Royal Ballet of Spain and Nederlands Dans Theater [….] Or has mastered the Pilates technique and has been training celebrity clients globally for 14 years.”
••• Also sort-of new: The Hotel June in Malibu, a sibling to the Hotel June near LAX. From Sleeper: “Native Hotel’s ownership […] and Proper Hospitality have announced the opening of Hotel June Malibu in Point Dume, California. The collaboration brings a shared vision for the property’s next chapter to life, honoring its past as the Native Hotel and, formerly, the Malibu Riviera Hotel.” Might be time for a field trip—but bear in mind that rates for a February weekend start at $586 per night, plus $272 in fees and taxes for the two nights. Weekdays are about $100 cheaper per night.
••• A clarification: last week’s roundup of new listings included the townhouse at 214 Equestrian Avenue. I wrote that the neighboring townhouse sold for much less, but that was evidently an intra-family transfer, and therefore, not a worthwhile comp.
••• The tree is nice enough, but the Miramar might want to beef up the sign budget.
••• There’s a new organization called ARTS District Santa Barbara; the website is mum about exactly where the boundaries might be, but on Instagram, it said, “The ARTS District is a lively and urbane neighborhood downtown, located on and around the 1200-1300 blocks of State Street” (i.e., near the Granada, Arlington, and Santa Barbara Museum of Art).
