••• This was news to me, but it has clearly been in the works for a long time: “In December of 2019, the Santa Cruz Island Foundation bought the old Bank of America building [at Linden Avenue and Carpinteria Avenue] in Carpinteria to be converted into the Chrisman California Islands Center. Re-construction has been underway since January of 2021. When complete, it will have one of the largest archives of California Islands records, papers, and collections along with interpretive displays, live video cams of the islands, dedicated art gallery of SCIFs Richard Diebenkorn island paintings, and an outdoor courtyard with representations of all the eight Channel Islands. Terra Marine Research & Education will also have a permanent home for its underwater ROV for future marine research and education.” (The text and rendering are from the TMRE website.) The Santa Cruz Island Foundation posted recently in an Instagram story that the center is close to being finished.
