••• Judging from the length of the Independent‘s article about La Paloma Cafe, opening Tuesday for dinner service in the old Paradise Cafe space, it must be the cover story for this week’s issue, but there’s not much news in it other than the food is being called “Californio” and “ranchero.” (The menu is below.) On Instagram, the restaurant said it’s taking reservations by phone, but when I called, the person I spoke with said that’s not till Tuesday and I should call back then.
••• And Teru, the new sushi-and-more restaurant from longtime Sakana chef Teruhisa Ogue, is shooting to open for dinner starting this Friday, November 27, in the former Roost space at 1305 State Street (Sola/Victoria). The menu:
••• More on Yona Redz, which Yona Estrada recently opened on State Street. —Noozhawk
••• Mо̄r Doughnuts—”mochi donuts made from scratch in the warmth of home”—hopes to launch pickup service this week.
••• While doing some holiday shopping at Field + Fort, I discovered Beato Chocolates. They’re made in Ojai and inspired by the town’s legendary artist, Beatrice Wood, who famously said that her secret for living so long was “chocolate, art books, and young men.” There are chocolates cast from her original pottery molds, but I bought a Ménage à Trois bar (with toffee and sea salt), named after Wood’s romantic relationship with Marcel Duchamp and Henri-Pierre Roché. (Had I been less of a sucker for toffee, I would’ve bought the Pinching Spaniards bar.) The chocolate was terrific and the branding is spot on. (Yes, the artwork is by Wood.)
