••• The two establishments replacing Chuck’s Waterfront Grill and Endless Summer at the harbor have been pushed back by about a month: Salty at the Beach is now slated to open late September, with Chomp on the Rocks following a few weeks later. In June, owner Aaron Petersen described the two (and of course it’s possible details have changed since then): “First floor: Chomp. The concept is a little retro dinner, with booths and fixed red stools. In addition to burgers, we serve a variety of old-school favorites—reubens, pulled pork nachos, chicken burgers, vegan and vegetarian as well as salads and fun finger meals. […] The second-floor concept will be similar to Endless Summer Cafe, with a large bar, seating both inside and out (two large patios), an expanded menu featuring salads, fish items, tacos, gourmet hot dogs and sausages, burgers, vegetarian and vegan items, and sharable plates. Full alcohol license, beer and wine, a lot of speciality drinks. We’ll continue to have six or seven TVs both inside and out and some live music so there will be a bit of a sports-bar feeling, but it’s not the only focus.” UPDATE: The opening info above came from a media rep. I just heard from Petersen, who said that they’re shooting to open Salty as early as September 15.
••• Itching to get out of town over Labor Day weekend? (I know I am, after seeing how many people were at the beach this past weekend.) From Bell’s in Los Alamos: “Excited to have our friend and colleague @Priedite1991 up here in Los Alamos serving some BBQ on Centennial next to the shop Labor Day weekend. This time there is no prepay package—you can come by and grab it from jump at 11 a.m. Saturday through Monday until sold out. Hand made tortillas and some killer sauces and pickles. Get your BBQ and then come see us inside for a beer or wine to-go! Just note that seating will not be available at Bell’s—this is a grab and go situation with the BBQ. I hear the park is nice this time of year.”
••• If you like Japanese food, I encourage you to try the bento boxes available from Yoichi’s. They’ve become a regular in our takeout rotation.
••• Another recommendation: after reading how the Metropulos Fine Foods is stepping up its cheese game, my husband went over to take a look. He had a nice conversation with one of the owners, Ann, who had seen his requests on Instagram and was working on them. So if you’re missing C’est Cheese, go check it out (although you might want to avoid the lunchtime rush).
••• 32 Anacapa Street is for rent; it apparently has been for sale for a while, since the listing touts a “major price reduction” (to $4.35 million). Let’s hope Corks n’ Crowns can stay there as long as possible.
••• Bibi Ji is about to start selling wine online: “We are pumped to announce that our e-commerce store is launching early next week! Now you can get the juice sent straight to your door, overnight if you’re in California.” Below: some new arrivals.
